A. Underground at The Standard, East Village, 25 Cooper Square (5th Street entrance). The American Design Club returns to Noho with its ninth group showcase, en- titled Trophy: Awards We Live With. “A trophy is a memento, token, or symbol used to commemorate an achievement or victory. Whether they are awarded, stolen, or created, trophy objects can come in many forms.” Featuring designs by Christopher Specce, Craighton Berman, Grain, Ladies & Gentlemen, Meg Callahan, Misha Kahn, Taylor Mckenzie-Veal, and more. B. FABWORKS, 75 East 4th Street. stopTHINKshop is a pop-up shop showcasing social good, co-curated by Given Goods, miLES, and TYTHEdesign. The shop will highlight new-to-market products that have been conscientiously designed to have a positive impact through the lens of sustainable, ethical, or local production. Sat-Sun, 11AM-8PM
C. Merchant’s House Museum, 29 East 4th Street. Built in 1832, the Merchant’s House is New York City’s only family home preserved intact, inside and out, from the 19th century. For the second edition of Modern Craft, a group of designers including Doug Johnston, Andrew O. Hughes, Meg Callahan, Eric Timothy Carlson, Aaron Anderson, Fort Makers, Dana Barnes, and ROLU will infiltrate the house’s time-capsule interior with a beautiful juxtaposition of contemporary objects. D. Plantworks, 28 East 4th Street. Sight Unseen presents “Mixed Greens,” an exhibition of plant- themed photographs by design and interiors photographers Brian Ferry, Paul Barbera, Leslie Williamson, Laure Joliet, and Debbie Carlos. Each photographer was invited to revisit past works that happen to feature plants—even if they weren’t originally the main subject of the shot. Fri, Sat & Mon, 10AM- 6PM; Sun 11AM-5PM
E. Lindsay Adelman Showroom, 1 Great Jones Street. Lindsey Adelman is opening the doors of her brand-new, appointment-only Noho showroom, which will be open to the public for four days during the Noho Design District. F. Model Citizens, Ugo Cacciatori, 35 Great Jones Street, 5th Floor. The 2013 edition of Model Citizens NYC is a two-part presentation: a curated selection of furniture, light- ing, accessories, and more from 20+ designers, plus the launch of a virtual gallery featuring selected works from around the globe that can only be seen online. Model Citizens will include work from Haptic Lab, Brooklyn; Bruno Petronzi, Italy; and X+Q Art, China, to name a few. Sat-Mon, 10AM-8PM
G. The Future Perfect, 55 Great Jones Street The Future Perfect welcomes spring with the debut of new work from Pinch, SCP, Heath Ceramics, Piet Hein Eek, and Hilda Hellström. H. Japan Premium Beef, 57 Great Jones Street. This year, the windows of this tiny high-end Japanese butcher will display a solo, meat-themed exhibi- tion by Philadelphia-based ceramicist Jessica Hans. Fri-Sun, 10AM- 8PM. Closed Mondays.
I. Great Jones Cafe, 54 Great Jones Street. Amidst the ceiling beams of the Great Jones Café, designer Daniel Moyer’s Brooklyn-based skateboard line Funkinfunctionlongboards presents an installation of 13 extra-wide, old- school, solid-wood sidewalk surfers. Each board is made in Bushwick, Brooklyn from scrap. Fri-Sun, 12PM- 7PM; closing happy hour Sun, 5PM-7PM
J. Environment, 350 Bowery. Join Environment as they launch a brand-new furniture collection by Commune, the Los Angeles-based firm best known for interiors like the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs and The Shop at The Standard Hotel. Called the Cleat Series, the furniture range includes crates, chairs, a dining table, coffee table, and daybed, all in warm woods and metals. Fri-Mon, 10AM-7PM
K. The Bowery Hotel, 335 Bowery. Sight Unseen is hosting a designer master class with up-and-coming designers Chen Chen and Kai Williams on May 17 at New York’s Bowery Hotel. Participants will learn how to make a basic mold and will then cast organic objects such as fruit and vegetables into their own handmade bowls, incense burners, or succulent planters. L. Billy Reid, 54 Bond Street. Brooklyn-based firm The Principals have designed a set of concrete dominoes called “Bare Bones” for Billy Reid. They’ll celebrate the release with a domino tournament on Saturday, May 18 at Billy Reid’s Noho store, with a prize presentation and cocktail to follow. M. Vitsoe, 33 Bond Street. Following Dieter Rams granting Vitsœ the exclusive worldwide license to his original furniture designs, Vitsœ has comprehensively re-engineered Rams’s 620 Chair Programme. To celebrate, Vitsœ will host the 620 Reading Room in collaboration with Dashwood Books. A hand-picked collection of 25 titles will be available to read (and buy) alongside complimentary Intelligentsia Coffee served by Gasoline Alley at limited times throughout the weekend. N. Various Projects, 2 Bond Street. Field and Various Projects present “Here & There,” a show of artists and designers invited to create objects on the theme of travel, including Tim Colmant, Daniel Gafner, Colgate Searle, Jonah Takagi, Okolo, Hannah Waldron, Katrin Greiling, The Good Flock, Studio Gorm, the thing, and more. P. Noho Next at SubCulture, 45 Bleecker St. The Noho Design District’s annual emerging talent showcase, presented by Jawbone with a special sound and design installation to celebrate the BIG JAMBOX, features the work of 13 up-and-coming American designers selected by Sight Unseen: Assembly, Atelier de Troupe, Brendan Keim, Brian Persico, Eric Trine, Jason Rens, Karl Zahn, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, Misha Kahn + Chris Wolston, Pat Kim, Pinto + Glasse, Professional Associates, and Souda, plus a special tea tasting with Tea Wing and Pat Kim on Saturday. Q. Extra Place, Extra Place (1st St. between Bowery & 2nd Ave). Fourth Arts Block and curator Keith Schweitzer present Back Alley Sessions, an exhibit celebrating the role of Extra Place in the development of experimental music and culture. It invites artists to look at both historic and fictional performances through Swissted, Mike Joyce’s re-imagined performance announcements on view in the windows of L’Apicio, and The Antagonist Art Movement’s ground mural. R. Inventory, 12 Extra Place. Vancouver-based Inventory magazine’s first US retail location opened in April 2013 in a tiny storefront on Noho’s Extra Place, with interiors by Kyle Garner. During the Noho Design District, the shop will debut Garner’s outdoor Sling Chair for his newly launched Sit and Read furniture line. Fri-Mon, 11AM-7PM
